Dachshunds around the world 🌎 Names and Clothing for Sausage Dogs

Dachshunds have captured millions of hearts across the globe. From wirehaired dachshunds, smooth or long, miniature or standard sized daxie's, we are are a brand that adores them all. Sausage Dog Box is on a mission to serve Dachshunds and their keepers worldwide, so we set upon a mission to find out really what people call our long-bodied friends.

So, what are dachshunds called in different countries?

1. 🇩🇪 Germany : Dachshund

In their country of origin, Germany, sausage dogs are simply known as “Dachshund,” which translates to “badger dog.” Originally bred for hunting, their unique shape allowed them to navigate burrows with ease - although you won't find many Dachshunds hunting nowadays, you'll find our furry friends spending 99.9% of their time burrowed under their dachshund blankets!

2. 🇺🇸 United States: Wiener Dogs

In the United States, these charming pups are often affectionately called “Wiener Dogs” due to their uncanny resemblance to hot dogs. We have taken this in our stride and of course we dress our dachshunds in hot dog outfits! This playful nickname has become a staple in American dachshund culture, and to celebrate this we have recently launched our adorable 'Weiner On Wheels' range of accessories, including a dachshund harness specifically designed for their unique body shape.

In both the US and Canada, you'll also find dachshunds sometimes referred to as a Doxie, Dashie, Dashound or Badger Dog or even Weenie Dogs in places like Tennessee! In California they are often known as "Long Dogs" however in New York dachshunds are often known as "Dotson Dogs" or "Doxin Dogs".

3. 🇬🇧 UK: Sausage Dogs

Here in the UK, dachshunds are commonly referred to as “Sausage Dogs,” thanks to their elongated bodies and resemblance to the popular naughty treat. Did you know, when German immigrants brought hot dogs (known as frankfurters in Germany and wieners in Austria) to America in the 1860s, street vendors often sold them as “dachshund sausages” because they resembled Doxies? In the UK we often hear dachshunds being referred to as Daxie's, however sometimes we hear some naughty words (we have some trouble makers over here!).

4. 🇫🇷 France: Teckels

Our French friends fondly refer to dachshunds as “Teckels.” This term, rooted in the German “Dachshund,” reflects their historical connection to German hunting traditions. Dachshunds are also commonly referred to as 'Teckles' in Finland, Croatia, Hungary and The Netherlands. In France, you'll also find dachshunds commonly called a Basset or a "Chien Saucisse" which is French for Sausage Dog, and over in Italy they are called a "Bassotto" which means short-legged one.

5. 🇸🇪 Sweden: Dackel

In Nordic countries like Sweden and Denmark, you'll find dachshunds are often called “Dackel,”a nod to the German origin of the breed. Despite linguistic variations and Nordic twists, their charm is universal. In some parts of Sweden, you'll also find these little dogs simply known as a Tex.
